Xiaomi launched the selfie-centric Redmi Y2 phone in India on Thursday at a starting price of Rs 9,999. The Redmi Y2 is the successor to last year's Redmi Y1. Just like the Redmi Y1, the Redmi Y2 is also a phone that is chiefly targeted towards the youth looking for a big screen and what is supposedly the best selfie experience, on a budget. The phone comes with a tall 18:9 near bezel-less display and a 16-megapixel camera on the front. Unlike the Redmi Y1 however, the Redmi Y2 isn't launching along with a Lite variant which means there will be no Redmi Y2 Lite, at least for now.

The Redmi Y2 is a rebranded version of the Redmi S2 that was recently launched in China. It boasts of more or less the same build and design scheme, as well as more or less the same hardware specifications.

Here's a closer look at the Xiaomi Redmi Y2.

SPECIAL FEATURES:

  •  Xiaomi launched the selfie-centric Redmi Y1 and Y1 Lite in India last year, and the Redmi Y2 is a gradual extension of that series because it's also a selfie-centric phone that's light on the pocket. At the same time, unlike the Y1 and Y1 Lite, the Redmi Y2 also focuses a great deal on rear camera(s). And, to an extent, even on the design and build.
  • The Redmi Y2 has a dual camera system on the rear -- 12MP+5MP -- with the secondary lens especially meant for taking portrait shots or photos with shallow depth of field. This setup uses AI to apparently help your portrait shots look better.
  •  On the front, the Redmi Y2 comes with a 16-megapixel camera with 'soft' LED flash and face unlock for biometric authentication. Even this camera is assisted by AI for enabling beautification in selfies. Xiaomi says that the 16MP front camera on-board the Redmi Y2 uses pixel-binning technique to combine data from four pixels into one single large 2.0um pixel, that apparently reduces noise and helps capture more light even in low and tricky light situations. Xiaomi calls this Super Pixel.
  •  The Redmi Y2 has a Mi 6X-like design although unlike the Mi 6X, the Redmi Y2 is an all-plastic phone with a brushed metal finish on top. Also, the antennas see a major reshuffle in that they're seen honing a new U-shaped outline. Their placement remains the same, which is towards the ends of the phone, much like it is in the Mi 6X. It measures 8.1mm in thickness and weighs in at 170 gram. It comes with a rear-mounted fingerprint scanner and on-screen navigation keys. The Redmi Y2 will come in three colour options: Dark Gray, Rose Gold and Gold.

PRICE AND AVAILABILITY

Xiaomi has launched the Redmi Y2 in India at a starting price of Rs 9,999 for the base 3GB RAM and 32GB storage version going all the way to Rs 12,999 for the top-end 4GB RAM and 64GB storage version. Both the versions will ship with a free clear case in the box and will be available for buying from June 12 exclusively from Amazon India and Mi.com/in. The phone will also be available for buying from Mi Home Stores in the days to come. Xiaomi has tied up with Airtel to offer Rs 1,800 cashback and 250GB additional data for buyers. It has also partnered with ICICI to offer Rs 500 cashback for users.
